Zdamwu General Secretary attending mining Indaba in South Africa
The Zimbabwe Diamond and Allied Minerals Workers Union (Zdamwu) General Secretary Justice Chinhema is one of the delegates attending this year’s high level Alternative Mining Indaba (AMI) in Cape Town South Africa.
The AMI which is running from the 8th to the 12th of May is running under the theme “A just energy transition for sustainable mining communities on a climate crisis era.”
Chinhema who is a Zimbabwean delegate was seconded by IndustriAll to attend the mining summit.
The AMI, which supports a “just and people centred approach to mining,” started as a civil society and community grassroots organisation platform to engage with the business-oriented African Mining Indaba held annually in South Africa.
Speaking from Cape Town the GS said this is a good opportunity for the growth of the union.
“The key of the engagement is that Zdamwu as an IndustriAll affiliate is being represented at this year’s mining indaba. As Zdamwu we will be Interacting with other regional mine industry unions to get an insight on how they are bargaining to achieve living wages, this is an opportunity to network and learning how other unions in the region are doing trade union work,” Chinhema said.
He added that the summit is also an opportunity to interrogate, “some of the investors who shows interest in coming to Zimbabwe. As you can see , Zimbabwe open for business mantra will be on the agenda.
“We shall make sure we know them and given an opportunity tell them that there are labour rights which we shall be pushing,” he said.
The General Secretary added that this is also an opportunity to interact with multinational companies mining in Zimbabwe such as the Anglo American.
