The Zimbabwe Diamond and Allied Minerals Workers Union (ZDAMWU)commends the Mineworkers’ Union of Zambia (MUZ) and the Egyptian General Trade Union of Miners, Quarries and Salinas for the historic signing of a Memorandum of Understanding.
The Zimbabwe Diamond and Allied Minerals Workers Union (Zdamwu) would like to commend the Mineworkers’ Union of Zambia (MUZ) and the Egyptian General Trade Union of Miners, Quarries and Salinas for the historic signing of a Memorandum of Understanding between the two parties with a view to invest in exploration and mining in Zambia. Last year, MUZ announced its plans to invest in exploration and mining as a way of contributing to the economic growth of the country and enhancing job creation. The strides taken by MUZ in advancing the cause of mine workers in Zambia is highly commendable. MUZ President Joseph Chewe said the Union has made steady progress in establishing its mining company in Zambia and contribute effectively to the country’s economy. We understand MUZ has already identified sites where it will establish a mining company through the partnership with some tradition leaders within the identified areas. As a union we do agree with the vision being shared by MUZ President who has since urged Trade Unions within Africa to join hands and consider becoming the main players in mining operations besides representing workers only. As Zdamwu we have been pushing for the reopening of mines in Zimbabwe and we will still continue doing so. It is high time there must be bilateral engagement of unions , exchange programs that benefit workers in the region. We are working for the same employer for a start. Political leaders meet and have exchange programs. Why not us as unions? *ZDAMWU General SecretaryJ Chinhema*The Zimbabwe Diamond and Allied Minerals Workers Union (Zdamwu) would like to commend the Mineworkers’ Union of Zambia (MUZ) and the Egyptian General Trade Union of Miners, Quarries and Salinas for the historic signing of a Memorandum of Understanding between the two parties with a view to invest in exploration and mining in Zambia.
